Description of the tour

After having breakfast in our home in Bani Hayoune, we will start our travel into the desert by 4x4 around 9 AM and move slowly towards our destination: Morocco's biggest sand dunes. During the trip we will stop at several places, where you can walk around to enjoy the views and immense silence. Your guide will provide you with interesting facts about the desert during the whole trip, and you are of course welcome to ask anything at anytime. Our guide Said has a lot of old knowledge passed down by his grandmother who used to be a high respected healer and herbalist.

We will stop at a well where wild animals and nomads with their animals often come to drink or collect water. There will also be a stop at an oasis, where a small spring rises from the earth. We will try to visit a camp of a nomad family. If they are at home, it is possible to have a short tea & biscuit break with them. Sometimes they serve fresh goat milk. It is depending on the weather and on which route we will drive if these stops will take place in day one or on day two.

On our way to the big dunes we will make a longer break at an oasis for Moroccan tea and lunch. You will have time to rest and to explore the beautiful surroundings. After lunch we continue our way and we will arrive before sunset in the big dunes, where we will settle down for one night in a camp. It is depending on availability in which camp we will stay. See more about our sleeping arrangements here. There will be private tents and there will be a toilets and showers. As people here have very little access to water, we ask you to use all water with care. After arriving to the camp, there will be free time to explore the dunes on your own, or accompanied by us if you desire this. There will be time to explore the wonderful landscape around the camp and to try the sandboards. The dunes are all yours. After sunset, we will prepare tea and biscuits for you.

After the sun has set we will have a three course meal: in winter this will be in one of the big tents, in summer outside. After dinner you can enjoy the amazing starry night around the camp, or perhaps see a moonrise. Possibly there will be some bedouins playing traditional music for you and depending on the weather we will make a fire.

The next morning you can choose to wake up for an incredible sunrise and have the dunes all for yourself. We will have breakfast between 8 AM and 9 AM and leave shortly after. On the route back we will visit fossil mountains where you have the possibility to find your own fossils. As mentioned before, it is a bit depending on our route which visits will take place in day one, and which in day two. There will again be time to stop at a well (or a different location, depending on how the wind and possibly rain shaped the route), to enjoy the surroundings, refresh yourself and for some fruits. In the afternoon we will arrive back to Bani Hayoune Garden.
